IELTS beginner FAQ

Seven things worth knowing. Ask me anything else later.

What is IELTS and why do I need it?

IELTS tests your English for study, work, or migration. Universities, employers and immigration offices ask for it because it is one score they all understand.

Academic or General Training — which one should I take?

Academic is for university study. General Training is for work and most migration. Listening and Speaking are the same in both; Reading and Writing differ. Check what the place you are applying to asks for, and pick that one.

What does IELTS test?

Four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken one after another on the same day. Speaking is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner, and may be on a different day.

How is IELTS scored, and what band do I need?

Each skill gets a band from 1 to 9, in half steps. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half. There is no pass or fail — the band you need is whatever the university, employer or visa office asks for, and that is the number to aim at.

How do I know my level and where I am weak?

Take one mock. It gives you a band for each of the four skills, so you can see which one is holding the others down. Guessing your level is the slowest way to start — one honest test tells you more than a month of worrying.

How does BandGuru make preparation easier?

I mark your writing and speaking and tell you what to fix, in Bangla when you want it. Your practice is built from the mistakes you actually make, not from a fixed syllabus. And it fits in your pocket — a few minutes counts.

How long can I practise with BandGuru?

As long as you like. Practice, vocabulary, your notebook and talking to me are free. Mocks come in packages: you pay once at checkout, and what a package includes is yours to use.
